Chorus Information

CMC Rehearsal with Symphony.jpgThe Charlotte Master Chorale performs as two ensembles, the Main Chorus and the Chamber Singers.

The Main Chorus is recognized as one of the leading Symphony Choruses in the Southeast. Approximately 100 singers perform in the Chorus, many of whom hold degrees in music. The Main Chorus performs within CMC’s larger productions and venues, including our performances with the Charlotte Symphony. The chorus also sings independently-produced concerts that are widely recognized for excellence and community-building.

The Chamber Singers, Charlotte's premier chamber choir, consist of 30 volunteer singers of professional caliber drawn from our Main Chorus, renowned for vocal prowess and artistic expression, and dedicated to performing challenging repertoire from all perios of music, from Baroque motets to the art music of today. The Chamber Singers are recognized as one of the premier chamber choruses in the Southeast.

Rehearsal Information

Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings at Covenant Presbyterian Church from 6-9:30 PM for Chamber Singers (as well as occasional Saturday mornings) or from 7:00-9:30 PM for Main Chorus. (Rehearsals for the two groups do not overlap nights.)

Membership Requirements

1. All members must be at least 18 years old and have graduated from high school at the time of audition. (For younger singers interested in singing with a choir, please ask us about our Young Artists in Residence program or contact theCharlotte Youth Choir.)

2. Attendance for all rehearsals and concerts is expected. Special arrangements must be approved by the Artistic Director.

Membership Dues

Charlotte Master Chorale does not mandate a set amount for annual membership dues. In lieu of dues, we do ask that everyone contribute something monetarily.

Audition Requirements

1. Perform a piano‐accompanied solo of your own choice, preferablysostenuto. The purpose of this is to hear you on music with which you feel comfortable and that will illustrate the quality of your voice. An accompanist will be provided, but you should supply a copy of your music. Art songs or arias are preferred, as this repertoire demonstrates a vocalism most closely used in symphonic choral singing.

2. Sing "My Country Tis of Thee" a cappella.

3. Read aloud the following German text:
Zwar ist solche Herzensstube wohl kein schöner Fürstensaal, sondern eine finstre Grube; doch sobald dein Gnadenstrahl in dieselbe nur wird blinken, wird sie voller Sonnen dünken.

4. Singers will also be asked to demonstrate ability in sight‐singing.
