Your Charlotte Master Chorale opens its 71st Season with one of the supreme achievements of classical music, Bach’s monumental Mass in B minor, featuring nationally-acclaimed soloists and the North Carolina Baroque Orchestra. As the culmination of Bach’s artistry, this immense work channels the traditional Catholic mass form through the composer’s distinctly Lutheran belief system, while in the process stressing the shared imperfection of humanity and the universality of religious experience and expression.
These performances celebrate the legacy of Western classical music in our community and promise to bring fresh life to an historic masterwork, inviting audience members young and old to experience what many consider the apex of classical vocal repertoire for the first time—or the fifth.
What makes Bach's Mass in B minor so special...
“The universal spirit of Bach which manifests itself in the B-Minor Mass produces... the paradox thatone of the most Christian works in all of sacred music transcends and dissolves its confessional limits, serving instead the whole of humanity."
– Yoshitake Kobayashi, Bach scholar (1987)
“It may well be true that Bach’sMass in B Minor – assembled, no less than created – has become, some two hundred and fifty years after he bound its 27 movements together, the most remarkable musical allegory of human existence – its pain, aspiration and promises.”
- Robert Shaw, conductor (1998)
