Franz Joseph Haydn’s choral masterpiece depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis, with additional texts from the Book of Psalms and John Milton's Paradise Lost. Haydn had traveled to England in the early and mid-1790s and was inspired by George Frideric Handel's large scale oratorios. He composed  The Creation  in 1797-98, and the work debuted to great acclaim in Vienna in 1799. The oratorio was published in 1800, in both German and English.
